Jungle House

The plot features a challenging topography divided into two distinct height levels: an upper level bordering the busy northern road, and a lower level directly adjacent to the active public pedestrian promenade along the southern riverfront. The southern portion of the site formerly housed an abandoned, unmaintained concrete tank. The design embraces this raw, sunken condition, converting it into a private pool and garden that preserves the wild, green genius loci—a "mini jungle" dominated by magnificent, mature banyan trees whose aerial roots drape down over the site. Entering the property is designed as a highly intimate, gradual experience, leading the family away from the street level down a winding concrete path enveloped by hanging roots.

The architecture seeks to capture the dramatic river views to the south while maintaining strict privacy for the family. The main residential volume opens entirely toward the water through expansive glass walls, but is protected from the busy pedestrian promenade by a high, sculptural perforated concrete screen wall. This porous barrier filters views and noise from the public path while letting fresh sea breezes pass through.

Spatially, the house uses deep concrete overhangs to shelter the living areas from intense solar radiation and heavy monsoon rains. Natural cross-ventilation is maximized as air flows from the river across the sunken pool, while the dense banyan canopies above naturally diffuse the harsh tropical daylight, bathing the concrete and glass interior in a soft, dappled glow.
