The Shell is a schematic design proposal for a major academic and training campus in Yichang, China, located along the upper Yangtze River in the immediate vicinity of the monumental Three Gorges Dam (TGD) area. Conceived as an environmentally responsive campus that respects the dramatic topography of the river basin, the project proposes a landscape-driven approach to architecture, integrating 300,000 square meters of program into the sensitive mountain slope.

To ensure that the massive educational center does not disrupt the sweeping, panoramic views from the mountain-side residential areas down to the Yangtze River, the design consciously avoids tall, vertical blocks. Instead, the program is divided into two parallel, low-profile volumes that follow the natural contours of the terrain. The larger, primary volume facing the river is dedicated to classrooms, collaborative workspaces, and research offices. The smaller volume, set higher up the slope closer to the mountains, is intended for student and faculty accommodation. Both volumes share a unified architectural language, defined by a continuous, fluid concrete thin-shell envelope that elegantly wraps all interior functions.

Internally, the deep, monolithic volumes are hollowed out by massive vertical lightwells and courtyards, which channel natural light and fresh air deep into the lower floors. These voids are paired with vertical structural and service cores that organize the layout—which includes open offices, stepped lecture halls, a library, and a café—while providing vertical circulation. The entire roof is designed as a walkable, fully vegetated green roof, visually absorbing the massive campus back into the wild Hubei hillside and restoring the natural ecosystem.

The architecture operates as an active, passive climate regulator. To counter the region's sudden temperature drops and high humidity, the building utilizes high thermal mass, passive solar heating, and natural stack ventilation. By merging built form with the terrain, the campus acts not as a foreign barrier, but as an artificial landscape—a contemporary "cultural reservoir" that aligns the monumental scale of the Three Gorges region with a human-centric, ecological vision.
