The Soundwave is a design proposal for the sustainable rehabilitation of the Théâtre Populaire Désiré Bonogo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. Developed during studies at the University of Sassari, the project was awarded 3rd Place in the Architecture category at the 5th Inspireli Awards (2020). The design re-imagines a derelict 1980s open-air amphitheater into a resilient and vibrant cultural hub for the Choreographic Development Center (CDC La Termitière).
The spatial organization and volumetric form of the entire complex are poetically structured around the physical morphology of soundwaves. Radiating outwards from the central stage, these acoustic curves dictate the concentric geometry of the amphitheater and the undulating, layered ribbons of the educational (LABO), production (WORK), and public (SHOW) areas. This fluid layout creates an intuitive flow through the site, translating acoustic energy into a physical architectural landscape.
Designed to withstand the extreme Sahelian climate, the proposal relies heavily on passive, climate-responsive design strategies that eliminate the need for mechanical air conditioning. The material palette centers on hemp-clay and bamboo. The high thermal mass of the hemp-clay walls acts as a thermal barrier, smoothing out drastic diurnal temperature fluctuations (which can exceed 45°C), while fast-growing local bamboo is used for structural elements, lightweight trusses, and dense, porous sunscreens. A sweeping double-roof structure floats high above the buildings, shading them from direct solar radiation and allowing warm air to rise and escape freely through the intermediate air gap.
Natural ventilation is harnessed through buoyancy-driven stack ventilation and night-vent cooling (night flushing), storing nighttime cool air in the high-mass walls to temper daytime heat. Additionally, vegetative cooling and integrated water bodies utilize natural evapotranspiration to lower surrounding air temperatures. By prioritizing local materials and community-driven, low-tech construction methods, the design bridges traditional West African building knowledge with contemporary ecological engineering, offering a sustainable, highly contextual space for public gathering and theatrical expression.
